VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh reported 214 new Covid-19 cases on Monday to take its cumulative caseload to 8,78,937. This is the lowest single-day case total in more than six months, after 222 cases on June 13. For the first time in months, four districts posted single-digit infections to the table.
The toll increased to 7,078 as two more people succumbed to the pandemic — one each from Guntur and Krishna districts. The active cases dropped below the 4,000-mark to 3,992, with 8,67,867 cumulative recoveries and 7,078 deaths.
Chittoor reported 46 new infections, followed by Krishna (23), Guntur (21) and Visakhapatnam (20). The remaining nine districts recorded less than 20 cases with Vizianagaram (4) registering the lowest number of infections of the day. The active cases are less than 200 in six districts.
The tested 40,295 samples on Monday to detect the 214 new cases, translating to a case positivity rate about 0.5%, which is again the lowest in the last six months. The state has so far conducted 1.13 crore tests with an overall positivity rate of 7.8% and mortality rate of 0.8%.
With the declining daily case numbers, the state health department has denotified even the five state-level Covid hospitals, including the government general hospitals in Vijayawada, Nellore and Kurnool, Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences in Visakhapatnam, and Padmavathi hospital in Tirupati. Other than in the initial few weeks, these hospitals, having advanced health infrastructure, served only to vulnerable Covid-19 patients, including elderly people, patients with comorbidities and severe cases.
