Andhra Pradesh: Collector orders arrest of medical officer who questioned him during Covid review (Screengrab from Twitter video)

In a bizarre incident, a furious district collector of Guntur asked the police to arrest a medical officer while he was holding the review meeting on Covid-19 on Thursday.

District Collector Guntur Samuel Anand ordered police personal to arrest Dr Somla Naik, a medical officer from Nadedla, under the disaster management act for trying to speak during the meeting.

The medical officer Naik tried to make some submission with the higher authority, which irked the collector as it was complaining in nature.

This incident soon took a political colour as TDP General Secretary N Lokesh tweeted condemning the incident and behaviour towards a ‘tribal’ officer.

N Lokesh tweeted, “The Jagan Reddy government’s atrocity on a tribal officer. During a review meeting on the corona in Narasaraopet, Guntur district, Nadendla medical officer Somlu Nayak, who questioned why officers like him were being blamed for the increase in cases without even providing the minimum facilities, was arrested. I condemn his brutal arrest. Somlu Nayak should be released immediately!”

However, the government has denied arresting the medical officer.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Govt Doctors’ Association has condemned the incident. The association has warned of a strike if arrest orders are not withdrawn and demanded a departmental inquiry into the alleged lapses as claimed by Dr Naik.
