Vijayawada: Tension prevailed at Gundimeda, Guntur district, on Sunday night after locals protested against the Covid-19 quarantine centre located there. The protests turned violent after locals started pelting stones at police, who in retaliation, had to resort to lathi charge to bring the situation under control. The episode left four people injured, including two police personnel.
The quarantine centre at Gundimeda was set up for primary contacts of confirmed patients and others who needed to be quarantined. On Sunday, police and health department officials had brought about 30 persons to the facility.
Fearing that the presence of the quarantine facility would only lead to further spread of the disease in the village, locals launched a protest demanding that it be removed.
They gathered at the quarantine centre and started arguing with the police to take away the Covid-19 patients. The situation soon spiralled out of control after a few locals pelted stones at the police and a scuffle broke out.
Police resorted to lathi charge to control the mob and later additional forces were brought in. After normalcy was restored, a police picket was set up outside the quarantine facility.
