Amaravati: A few months after downgrading the Vijayawada police commissionerate to IG rank from additional DG rank, the state government has now lowered the south-coastal zone (Guntur) police chief post from IG to DIG rank.
The state government, which kept the south coastal IG post vacant for nearly two months since the retirement of J Prabhakara Rao, had appointed a 2005-batch IPS officer CM Trivikram Varma as DIG.
Guntur zone covers four police district units including Guntur urban, rural, Prakasam and Nellore. The downgrading of top posts in Vijayawada and Guntur is significant in the wake of the state government’s plans to move the executive capital city to Vizag.
The state government had downgraded the Vijayawada police commissionerate when it appointed an IG rank officer Battina Srinivasulu to replace the additional DG rank city police chief Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao.
Guntur zone was upgraded to IG rank almost a decade ago much before Vijayawada city got the additional DG rank police commissioner. Keeping in view of law and order situation and vast area to manage, Guntur district was bifurcated into two units making the city as a separate urban district.
Although the plans were also readied to further upgrade the Guntur urban unit to the police commissionerate status, the previous TDP government tweaked them with a view to constitute a mega police commissionerate with Amaravati as its headquarters.
