According to CH Suresh, sub-inspector of Rentachintala, the dispute started when Fatima’s mother questioned a man, Annapureddy Mallikarjuna, why he was roaming around without a face mask. Earlier Mallikarjuna and his brother had chided Fatima’s father Yalamanda, a rickshaw puller, for not wearing a mask.
Vexed by the admonition, Mallikarjuna entered into a verbal dual with Fatima’s mother that soon it escalated into a physical fight. His brother Venkatesh (24) father Srinu (43) and uncle Samba (30) joined him and attacked Yalamanda and his wife with sticks. Seeing that her parents were under attack, Fatima tried to intervene and stop the fight. However, in the process she suffered an injury on her head from one the sticks and collapsed. She was rushed to Guntur but succumbed to the head injury after a week.
