GUNTUR: A heated argument over how the Covid-19 pandemic was being managed in a region of Andhra Pradesh was enough for Guntur district collector I Samuel Anand Kumar to order the arrest of a government doctor.
Nadendla primary health centre (PHC) medical officer Dr Somla Naik had objected to some of the comments that Kumar made during a review meeting at Narsaraopet on Thursday after which both shouted at each other. This led to perhaps the first instance of a district collector ordering the arrest of a doctor for questioning him.
Police officials immediately took Naik into custody and shifted him to the DSP office. He was detained till late evening. He was later allowed to go home.
Sources added that a number of senior officials were present in the meeting, but no one objected to the arrest orders. Among those present were joint collector (development) Prasanthi, district medical and health officer (DMHO) J Yasmin, and local RDO.
