VIJAYAWADA: Tension prevailed at Gundimeda under Tadepalli mandal in Guntur district on Sunday night after the locals protested against Covid-19 quarantine centre in the area. The protests turned violent after the locals started pelting stones at police and cops had to lathicharge the mob to bring situation under control.
The officials have set up a quarantine centre at Gundimeda to put symptomatic patients and others who need to stay under institutional quarantine. On Sunday, police and health department officials brought about 30 persons to the quarantine centre at Gundimeda.
However, the locals launched a protest demanding to remove quarantine centre from their village. Locals gathered at the quarantine centre and started arguing with the police to take back the persons from their village. Heated arguments soon turned violent as they started pushing each other.
Suddenly some miscreants started pelting stones at police. As the situation went out of hands, cops resorted to lathicharge to control the mob. Police personnel and two persons brought to the quarantine centre got injured in the stone pelting incident. Additional force was sent to Gundimeda and cops disbursed agitating mob from the quarantine centre. Police picket has been set up in the village as a precautionary measure.
