GUNTUR: Dalit leaders cutting across the political affiliations paid rich tributes to former Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, who died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi on Thursday. The leaders hailed the services of Paswan to the dalits during his long political career.
Addressing a condolence meeting in Guntur on Friday, former minister and MLC Dokka Manikyavaraprasad of the YSRC said that Paswan was an iconic leader for dalits at the national level and his untimely death was a big loss to the community.
He said that Paswan was chiefly responsible for declaring Dr BR Ambedkar birth anniversary as national holiday.
“Paswan had worked with six prime ministers from different political parties. He was single handedly responsible for bringing the Mandal commission report to the light and its implementation leading to empowerment of millions of people from backward classes across the country,” said Dokka.
He said that Paswan’s role in making the Tsundur massacre against dalits as a national movement was unforgettable.
Former minister Nakka Anand Babu of the TDP said that dalits have lost the champion of their rights at national level with the sudden demise of Paswan. He said that Paswan was a fatherly figure for all the dalit leaders who reach New Delhi and resolve their grievance.
TDP Guntur district president and former legislator Tenali Sravan Kumar said that dalits would have further benefitted had Paswan became the prime minister during the coalition governments. State Bank of India SC employees federation state general secretary Medida Baburao presided over the meet in which agriculture market yard chairman Chandragiri Yesurathnam, Maddirala Emmanuel, Namrath Kumar, Dr Korivi Vinay Kumar were also participated.
Earlier in the day, home minister Mekathoti Sucharitha paid tributes to dalit leader Kanshiram on his death anniversary. She along with husband and IRS officer M Dayasagar and several other dalit leaders garlanded the statue of Kanshiram.
